For the first time in history, you can fly nonstop from the US mainland  to Hokkaido. Here’s why that matters and why this winter is the one to book.

For years, the logistics of getting from America to Niseko have involved a lot of patience. A long haul to Tokyo, an overnight stay, and a connecting flight north to Sapporo CTS. Door to powder, you were typically looking at 24-48 hours of travel depending on your origin city and how the connections landed.

That changes this December.

The News

United Airlines has announced the launch of the first-ever nonstop service between the continental United States and Sapporo, beginning December 11, 2026.

The route operates from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to New Chitose Airport (CTS) — Sapporo’s main gateway, and the airport that serves all of Hokkaido. Flights will operate three times weekly aboard a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, running through the end of the 2026-27 ski season in late March 2027.

It is, by any measure, a historic connection. Skiers, snowboarders, and winter travellers from across the United States, including those connecting through San Francisco from the other regions of the country, can now reach the doorstep of Japan’s greatest powder destination without a Tokyo layover.

What It Means for a Niseko Trip

New Chitose Airport is approximately two hours by road from Niseko’s ski villages. Private transfers are available directly from arrivals, and shuttle services run regularly in ski season. The moment you clear customs, you are two hours from the best powder snow in the world.

The Tokyo connection has always added time, cost, and friction to a Niseko trip from North America, particularly for shorter visits where every day on the mountain counts. A direct SFO – CTS flight compresses the journey in a way that makes a 5-10 night Niseko trip more realistic, more comfortable, and more efficient than it has ever been for American travellers.

For those already en route through San Francisco, this is straightforward. For travellers from other US cities, SFO is one of the best-connected airports in the country… a hub for United and a natural one-stop routing point from virtually anywhere in the continental US.

Why This Winter, Specifically

The Siberian weather systems that define Hokkaido’s snowfall typically begin delivering in earnest from early December and by the second half of the month, the mountain is usually well-covered and firing. January is statistically the snowiest month, base depths can exceed 3–4 metres on the upper mountain and the powder quality during this window is as good as ski conditions get anywhere on the planet.

The inaugural SFO–Sapporo service launches on December 11. That timing is not accidental. This is United positioning directly for the ski market, and for good reason: Niseko’s international reputation has only grown, and American interest in Japan skiing has been building steadily as word of the JaPow experience spreads.

The current exchange rate is incredibly favorable as well. Once you’re on the ground in Japan, you’re basically getting a 30-40% discount on everything from accommodation, ground transportation, dining and of course guiding, putting you in the best snow on earth for a fraction of the cost.

If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to make this trip, the direct flight is the signal.

What to Do Next

Routes like this fill quickly once they become known, particularly on the late December through mid-February departures that align with the best snow. Accommodation in Niseko during peak ski season – including slope side hotels, high-end chalets, condos and more (how about a private onsen in your room?) – book well in advance, with the premium options typically secured by early summer.

If this is the trip that’s been sitting in the back of your mind, or if you’re like most and want to return every season; The logistics have caught up.
